What Is Fasting?
Fasting, simply defined, means abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. During this season, you are encouraged to substitute times of eating with times of prayer. The discipline of fasting releases anointing, which is the favor and the blessing of God on a person’s life.
Types of Fasting
This type of fast involves removing certain foods from you diet- like sweets, meat or bread.
This Fast involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day or from sunrise to sunset.
This fast is common for those who do not have much experience fasting food. They might have have health issues that prevent them fasting or they may wish to refocus balance in their life from things that might be out of sync. An example of this is someone who wants to abstain from texting or watching TV. During the fast they remove that element from their life. Once the fast is over, they reintroduce that element back into their life.
This type of fast involves drinking water and light juices.
What are some benefits of fasting?
God promises us in Isaiah 58:6-9 that when we fast and pray we can expect:
- Bonds of wickedness to be loosened
- Heavy burdens to be undone
- Those who are oppressed to be set free
- Every yoke to be broken
- Light to break forth like the morning
- Healing to spring forth speedily
- Righteousness to go before you
- Glory to guard you from behind
- God to answer when we cry out
fasting is about focusing on Jesus, not about abstaining from food.
“…and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.”
Isaiah 58:6-9 (NLT)
“No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. “Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.
